People can find the good in just about anything but themselves. Look at me. It’s clear to all of you that I am awesome. But I could never admit that. That would make me an ass. But what I can do is see what makes Annie awesome. She’s driven. We need driven people or the lights go out and the ice cream melts. And Pierce, we need guys like Pierce. This guy has wisdom to offer. We should listen to him some time. We wouldn’t regret it. And Shirley, Shirley has earned our respect. Not as a wife, not as a mother, but as a woman. Don’t test her on that, because that thing about the jukebox was too specific to be improvised. And Troy. Who cares if Troy thinks he’s all that? Maybe he is. You think astronauts go to the moon because they hate oxygen? No, they’re trying to impress their high school’s prom king. And Abed. Abed’s a shaman. You ask him to pass the salt, he gives you a bowl of soup. Because you know what, soup is better. Abed is better. You are all better than you think you are. You are designed not to believe it when you hear it from yourself. I want you to look to the person to your left. Sorry. Look at the person sitting next to you. I want you to extend to that person the same compassion you extend to sharks, pencils and Ben Affleck. I want you to say to that person, “I forgive you.” You’ve just stopped being a study group. You have become something unstoppable. I hear by pronounce you a Community.

that vulture.com post is hilarious because it automatically assumes that our present day is more progressive than the past and like lmao give me a break i mean there are a lot of conditions that have improved but you know what’s more interesting than thinking about steve rogers coming out of the ice all “high on 1940s social norms” is thinking about a dude who went through the first few years of world war ii already hating bullies and then slept through mccarthyism, slept through the police suppression of anti-vietnam war protests and slept through all the years in which the american left got beaten back and beaten back and ceded so much ground again and again until eventually right became center and protesting against the vast expansiveness of the american military infrastructure—let alone against the wars in afghanistan and iraq and all the interventions in the meantime that we hardly even think about—became all but impossible

like the hilarious thing about saying that steve would be more john mccain than barack obama is that it completely misses and ignores how conservative obama as a president is and has been, especially in the realm of foreign policy, and it’s a result of those intervening years. it’s because of that rightward shift that was part and parcel of the united states’ military expansion during the cold war that came off the heels of its victory in world war ii. and steve rogers, sleeping through that, missed the years where the very contributions to the war effort that he made helped lead to the growth of the u.s. as the bully that he never wanted to see. and isn’t it more interesting, after all, to think about someone who doesn’t take the place we are now as a given? who doesn’t accept that that’s the way things are just because that’s the way things have been? i don’t know about you, but it is to me.

lmao that vulture dot com post is like a big blind pat on the back that nobody deserves       OH BUT HI I AM ALSO SQUEAMISH ABOUT HOLDING STEVE UP AS THE IDEAL OF AMERICA BY COMPARING HIM TO THE OLD LEFT!!!!!!       yes voices of dissent have always existed but we need to always remember that       labor unions during the first half of the twentieth century were OFTEN racist and exclusive against women       and feminists advocating for women’s suffrage were often directly complicit in u.s. colonial projects AND SO       it is important to remember that they existed but it’s also important not to ignore the fact that they still contributed actively       to violent and racist systems of power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAPTAIN AMERICA IS A PARABLE FOR THE DENATURALIZATION OF AMERICAN MILITARY POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shoutout to nonbinary POC. You deserve a lot more recognition and visibility than you get. You’re real, and you matter.
